Training

Safety first.
Gregory Electric’s emphasis on training is unique. We believe a qualified and safe company, whose workers not only know what to do but also why they do it, best serves the customer.

We require all skilled employees to demonstrate proficiency through both written and hands-on testing. (Our written tests are based on the same national standards as our apprentice program.) And even though our team of specialists is proven and highly trained, we continue their education in trade upgrades and work techniques on a regular basis. Our programs cover safety, technical skills, customer relations and supervisory training.

Safety Training

OSHA 10/30 Hour Courses – Most Gregory supervisors have received the OSHA 10/30 hour training. It is our goal to train all supervisory employees. Gregory electric has three OHSA authorized trainers.

MSHA Training – Gregory Electric often works in mining operations. We have sufficient supervisors with additional MSHA training to support these projects.

Quarterly Foremen Safety Training – Gregory supervisors are required to participate in three hours of safety training quarterly. The topics are based on general safety issues with emphasis on current high-risk areas.

Weekly Employee Safety Training – Gregory supervisors conduct documented weekly training with all employees. Topics are outlined by the Safety Officer and are based on OSHA required topics and an overall Gregory risk analysis (drafted annually by our safety officer). Supervisors may supplement topics, but may not substitute other training.

Job Site Hazard Analysis – At the beginning of each job, the supervisor analyzes all risks associated with that job and designs risk mitigation procedures to reduce all risks to an acceptable level. The supervisor then trains all employees on these procedures before they set foot on the job site. When the risk changes, the procedures are modified and all employees on that job are trained on the changes.

New employee safety training – Prior to receiving job specific training or going on any job, new employees go through a formal one-hour safety orientation program.

Technical Training

Apprenticeship Program – Gregory Electric conducts a four-year apprenticeship program for electricians that is accepted by the Bureau of Apprentice Training with the US Department of Labor. We also have a four-year program for medium voltage linemen. Both programs involve classroom theoretical training and on the job practical training and certification.

Electrician and Linemen Certification Program – New employees in these classifications who are hired with advance stages of training must take certification tests, both written and hands-on. This verifies their level of expertise.

Remedial Electrician and Linemen Training – If a current or new employee is deficient in a limited number of areas of basic knowledge for his craft, Gregory Electric provides remedial training based on apprentice training materials.

Continued Training for Engineers – All Gregory engineers receive at least 16 hours of training each year in their area of specialty.

Specialty Topics Training – Gregory Electric is involved in highly technical areas such as power quality problems and systems design. In addition to in-house training, our employees received more than 200 hours of specialty type training last year alone.

Special Certification Training – Many of the specialties within the company require special certifications. This includes Infrared Thermography, where our technicians are certified at Level III.

Customer Relations Training

In-house Training for Supervisors – As part of Level I and Level II Supervisory Training, Gregory supervisors are oriented on the company’s approach to customer service.

In-house Training for Customer Contact People – When employees who may have contact with our external customers are hired, they undergo an extensive orientation on the Gregory philosophy of customer service.

Outside Training for Officers, Project Managers and Sales Staff – In an effort to better analyze and respond to customers’ needs, employees with responsibility for customer contact undergo an external course to help them develop strong communication skills.

Supervisory Training

Level I Supervision – All new foremen take an in-house 20-hour supervisory training course. This course involves topics on safety, customer relations, leadership, communications and company policies and procedures.

Level II Supervision – All new superintendents take an in-house 10-hour advanced supervisory training course. This course continues with topics on safety, customer relations, leadership, communications and company policies and procedures.

Project Management – Project managers and officers of the company take a course specifically designed to instruct them on Gregory procedures for project management. This course is based on our extensive Project Manager Manual and Gregory Policies and Procedures. Managers are eligible to take this course only after they have completed the Level I and Level II Supervisory courses.
